BOLIVIA: Morales regains MAS party leadership
On 23 May Bolivia’s supreme electoral court (TSE) ruled that former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) is still the leader of the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), annulling a change of leadership that was announced at a party congress organised by the MAS faction that is loyal to President Luis Arce.

BRAZIL: Rio governor survives impeachment trial
On 23 May the regional electoral court of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state (TRE-RJ) ruled in favour of the state’s governor, Cláudio Castro, absolving him of the charges of abusing state finances to benefit his 2022 gubernatorial election campaign.

HAITI: US reaffirms support for MSS amid arrival date speculation
On 23 May US President Joe Biden gave a joint press conference with Kenya’s President William Ruto in Washington in which he reaffirmed US support for Kenya’s plan to deploy 1,000 police as part of the multinational security support (MSS) mission to Haiti.

MEXICO: ICJ rejects measures against Ecuador in embassy dispute
On 23 May the International Court of Justice (ICJ) denied Mexico’s request for emergency measures to protect its embassy in Ecuador, after Ecuadorean security forces forced entry into its embassy in Quito at the beginning of April.
